“And the Lord shewed me four carpenters” -Zechariah 1:20
These four are representative of men of God, through several generations, that make impact on a national and international scale.
That would require similar to:
Our lives, our fortunes,
and our sacred honor.
The prophet inquires:
“What came these to do?”
The angel that spoke to him, refers him to was is known from Daniel’s prophecy as horns.
Global superpowers.
These were the 4 gentile empires:
-Babylon
-Persian
-Greece
-Rome
“These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
There is a bit of irony.
Understood by the biblically astute.
God himself scattered the nation… but
“I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.”
-Zechariah 1:15
The Lord was disciplining Israel with these other nations but didn’t appreciate their zeal in doing so.
They were tyrannical.
“So that no man did lift his head”
So he sent “carpenters”
“To fray them… which lifted up their horn over the land”
Notice.
This is ongoing.
For the prophet speaks of the four horns as past tense, yet is writing
“In the second year of Darius”
-Circa 520 B.C.
Be advised.
